Customs

Customs are when people have shared Cultural References that influence behavior in relation to each other and to certain shared activities. When people have shared customs or knowledge of customs, it gives prior knowledge and expectations that if the setting or group is right, those customs will be followed or the expectation is there that they will be followed. It is easier to follow or be obedient to a known and expected custom. I know of no custom which is universal to all groups and people.

Acting according to the customs of a group you are with or visiting also makes interacting or being with them easier for everyone. Attacking or denigrating a group’s customs is a good way to not be welcome within that group or by its people. The old phrase, “When in Rome do as the Romans do,” is appropriate to this. The Leather and Gorean Traditions have some fixed or semi-fixed customs they expect their members to follow and sometimes guests to follow as well.

There is a custom in some M/s, D/s and BDSM groups and individuals for submissives or slaves to wear little to no clothing at times. This can be true in scenes, training or at other times when it will not be a legal or functional problem. Collars on submissives and especially on slaves marking them as sub or slave is another common custom. The BDSM scene play safewords of red, yellow and green are other customs that many follow and are required at some locations and times.
