Apprentice
This Tool comes from a TED Talk about body language. It helps to provide some of the science behind how people perceive and do things. The talk is Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are.
There are questions about the original study and some of the results it found and claimed. See an Inc.com article about it and read the rejection of the original study by Dana Carney, one of the original authors. And then, there is a follow up article in the Journal of Psychological Science which adds information to and a rebuttal of the rebuttal to the original study. From my reading, Carney may well be correct about the effects of body positions on testosterone and cortisol, but not the feelings from the positions and the feelings they may have on others.
The primary tool you can learn from the presentation is Body Positioning and how to use it to show dominance and enforce submission. There are two parts. First the Master's body should be positioned to show dominance through using “high power posing” when working directly with a slave. Second is the training of the slave to pose in specific “low power positions” which reinforces their submission to the Master.
In the presentation, the speaker referenced a study which showed that the “high power poses” or dominant positions increased testosterone and reduced the stress hormone cortisol. The submissive positions reduced testosterone and increased cortisol. In addition, it has been shown that two people take complementary positions; when one person takes the dominant position, this will tend to cause the other to take the submissive position.
In the first part there is the assumption of dominance by the Master. While the first part is important, it is a passive tool. Masters or Trainers do not have to always use high power posing just to show or enforce their dominance. You can still assert dominance from any position. This means that you don't have to continually exert dominance to be effective. A Master or Trainer can be dominant through other more passive behaviors such as confidence and actions such as decisiveness more than just through high power posing or dominant Body Positions.
The second part is the active tool, the reinforcement of the enslavement through the training of submissive body positions when used on an ongoing basis. If you remember the scandal at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, prisoners were put into Humiliation and Stress Positions to break them and make them more passive so as to get them to divulge information. BDSM play is full of the use of Stress Positions or stress on the body during bondage and other activities. Waterboarding has even been turned into BDSM play.
The knowledge of why certain things were done at Abu Ghraib prison is useful. Doing those specific things may or may not be useful in the context of consensual slavery because we are working with consent in what we do during training. The goal of consensual enslavement is not to harm but to change. It’s like weight training. You can do fewer reps with more weight or more reps with less weight and still get to the same place. If you can take something that was non-consensual and do a safer, less violent or humiliating version of it more often, it will have a similar affect to the original non-consensual actions with less chance of bad results, or the need for damage control. Keep in mind, you will likely have to do damage control even while trying to do everything right. There is no need to deliberately cause more damage that goes beyond what can be easily repaired.
I recently watched a presentation on conflict resolution between Master and slave. The presenter, who was a slave, made use of Body Positioning in her presentation as a way of defusing what could be a tense situation on both sides.
Even though low power posing is standard protocol, by coming to him and kneeling, it automatically puts her in a Submissive Position to him allowing him naturally to take the dominant position. When presented a problem for him to solve, reinforcing his dominance enables him to take the leadership role and makes the situation less confrontational for him starting from the presentation all the way to the resolution.
This is also a very good way for a slave to use the tool for her own reinforcement of her submissive position and for her Master to have his dominant position reinforced as well. Yes, it really does work both ways.
